Background: BAROCCO'S WINTER COLLECTION, SHOWN IN ROME ON SATURDAY (JULY 19), CHASES AWAY THE COLD AND GLOOM WITH THE STYLES AND COLOURS OF THE EXOTIC EAST.

THE 'PSYCHOLOGY OF THE COLLECTION', SAYS BAROCCO'S CATALOGUE, IS A STRICT DISCIPLINE BASED ON TWO COLOURS. THE MAIN COLOURS EMPLOYED ARE 'BLUE COSMO', AND 'GREEN ANTARES' -- A DEEP BLUE AND A VIBRANT TURQUOISE -- BOTH, SAYS BAROCCO, INSPIRED BY THE LAST SPACE TRIP.

FABRIC PRINTERS WERE INSTRUCTED TO PRINT PATTERNS INSPIRED BY 'GALAXIES', AND EMBROIDERERS WERE TOLD TO 'FIX THE INFINIT STELLAR MOVEMENT', TO QUOTE THE SOMEWHAT CURIOUS LANGUAGE OF THE CATALOGUE.

THE RESULT, HOWEVER, IS FAR FROM THE 'SPACE-AGE' STARKNESS OF COURREGES AND CARDIN IN PAST COLLECTIONS. WITHOUT THE ACCOMPANYING PUBLICITY, ONE MIGHT BE FORGIVEN FOR THINKING THAT BAROCCO'S INSPIRATION CAME FROM ARABIA AND AFGHANISTAN RATHER THAN THE SEA OF TRANQUILITY.

HE SHOWS LONG COATS, LIKE GALITZINE AND CAPUCCI, BUT THE FABRICS ARE LIGHT, THE EMBROIDERY HEAVY AND SUMPTUOUS, INTERLACING GOLD, SILVER, PINK AND PURPLE IN ELABORATE PATTERNS UP SPINES AND DOWN SLEEVES.

THIS, BAROCCO CALLS HIS 'TANSILVANIAN' STYLE. THERE IS EMBROIDERY, TOO, ON SOME OF HIS JUMPER AND TROUSER SUITS, BUT HE ALSO SHOWS SIMPLE MINI-COCKTAIL DRESSES -- BEARING ONLY HIS INITIAL B ON THE BOSOM, OVER SHIMMERING SPANGLED FINE SILK JERSEY STOCKINGS.

THERE IS AN OBVIOUS SPACE INFLUENCE IN THE MATERIAL OF SOME OF HIS DRESSES AND EVENING BERMUDAS, WHICH LOOK LIKE HEAT-DEFLECTING ALUMINIUM, AND IN THE ALUMINIUM DOMES OF THE HELMETS WORN BY MANY OF HIS MODELS.

BUT NOTHING COULD BE FURTHER FROM THE BULKY, GRAVITY-INDUCING SUITS OF ALDRIN, ARMSTRONG AND COLLIN THAN BAROCCO'S FEATHER-FLUTTERING "PARADISE BIRD" EVENING ENSEMBLES, THOUGH NO-ONE WOULD DENY THAT THEY WERE 'OUT OF THIS WORLD'.
