Background: The former leader of the banned Solidarity trade union, Lech Walesa, had a meeting with Poland's Catholic Primate, Cardinal Jozef Glemp in Gdansk on January 22. Neither man would comment on the discussions, but Mr. Walesa's religious adviser, Father Henryk Jankowski, said the two men had discussed the overall situation and outstanding issues. Cardinal Glemp travelled to Gdansk for a service to mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of the consecration of Bishop Lech Kaczmarek in the Baltic port. He met with Walesa before the mass which was held in the chancery adjacent to the massive 13-century St. Mary's cathedral. More than three hundred people followed Walesa from the church chanting the name of the banned trade union. Thousands of worshippers were in the cathedral for the service and police were stationed throughout the town, although they made no move to disperse the crowds. It was the first meeting between Walesa and Glemp since last May and appears to underline the Polish church's support for Walesa's outspoken defence of the free trade union movement and political detainees.
