KISSINGER: "I am returning to Washington because preparations for the visit of General Secretary (Leonid) Brezhnev of the Soviet Union require my presence. While I am absent Ambassador Sullivan will continue the discussions with Minister Tat. I plan to return to Paris on Tuesday, because negotiations are still in progress, I will say nothing further about my conversations with Le Due Tho."

Background: Dr. Henry Kissinger, special adviser to United States President Richard Nixon, flew from Paris to Washington on Saturday (9 June) after he and North Vietnamese negotiator, Le Duc Tho had reached an impasse -in negotiations to save the fragile Vietnam ceasefire agreement.
The failure to conclude the discussions and issue a joint communique surprised observers, who thought agreement on strengthening the ceasefire was imminent. There was no statement on what the last-minute disagreement was. Dr. Kissinger was to fly back to Paris on Tuesday (12 June) to continue the talks, and deputies were to attempt a reconciliation in the interval.
