Background: RUSSIAN SAILORS WERE FORCED TO LEAP FOR THEIR LIVES INTO HAMBURG HARBOUR TODAY (THURSDAY) WHEN THE 3-THOUSAND TON REFRIGERATED FREIGHTER, BRUNSWICK, CAPSIZED AFTER LEAVING DRYDOCK.

THE RUSSIANS, WHO HAD JUST TAKEN OVER THE SHIP FROM ITS FORMER GERMAN OWNERS, WERE ALL PICKED UP UNHARMED, BUT ONE GERMAN OFFICIAL WAS REPORTED TRAPPED ONBOARD AND RESCUE CREWS LATER FREED HIM BY CUTTING THROUGH THE HULL.

THE BRUNSWICK, WHICH WAS BUILT IN 1956, IS THE NINTH SHIP TO HAVE BEEN SOLD TO THE SOVIET UNION BY THE BRUNS COMPANY OF HAMBURG. IT HAD BEEN PLACED IN DRYDOCK FOR AN OVERHAUL AND REPLACEMENT OF THE ENGINES.

AS YET THERE IS NO EXPLANATION AS TO WHAT CAUSED THE CAPSIZE.
