Background: United Nations Secretary-General Dag Hammerskjoeld, in a continued bid to restore calm in the troubled Lebanon, flew from the capital, Beirut, on Saturday, for talks in Amman in neighbouring Jordan.

Driving to Beirut airport, the Secretary-General saw these army patrols and tanks rumbling through the streets of the capital. Troops manned sand-bagged positions at vantage points.

Occasional bombing and sniping was reported to be continuing throughout the country but the Army, to keep strife from turning into mass bloodshed, is unwilling to open an offensive.

Mr. Hammerskjoeld was seen off at the airport by the United Nations Chief Supervisor in the Lebanon, General Bull, on extreme right.
