Background: The closing down yesterday (Thursday) of the United States Military Aid Command effectively wound-up 12 years of active American intervention in South Vietnam. The final ceremony was attended by the US Commander, General Frederick Weyand, and the Ambassador to Saigon, Mr. Ellsworth Bunker. In a short speech the General told his remaining staff that the efforts of American servicemen had achieved "peace with honour" in Vietnam. The headquarters flag was furled, prayers said for the 45,943 Americans who lost their lives in the war and the General shook hands with members of his staff.
