Background: Soccer ... and in Buenos Aires, Boca Juniors off Argentina and Borussia Moenchengladbach of West Germany drew two-all in the first leg of the inter-continental soccer club cup played on Tuesday (21 March).
SYNOPSIS: Borussia Moenchengladbach, wearing white, opened the attacking, but lost possession to Boca. However, Borussia's goal-keeper Kleef was on the alert and blocked the shot comfortably enough.
Now it's the visitors turn to attack. At this stage, the West Germans were consistently playing better football, and were stretching and troubling the local team's defence.
Though uneasy in the face of the German thrusts, Boca showed the potential danger that can stem from a fast breakaway. A good, old-fashioned flanking run worked the ball into a likely scoring position.
Boca's opening goal came in the 14th minute when Ernesto Mastrangelo dribbled around the diving goalkeeper and did not miss his wide and inviting target.
Stung into action, Borussia swept forward. Wimmer put the ball past goalkeeper Osvaldo Santos, but another Boca player saved on the line.
The equaliser came in the 23rd minute when Hannes stopped a weak clearance by Boca fullback Francisco Sa, and shot truly.
The visitors quickly went into the lead. From a free kick, they gained the corner, and after a defensive muddle, Bonhof shot past Santos to make it two-one. Despite a rally by Boca, it was the last goal of the first half.
After the interval, the home team opened with a fresh attack. In the sixth minute of the second half, substitute Jorge Ribolzi scored the equaliser from a pass by Ernesto Mastrangelo. And that was that.
