    Background: Weightlifting....and the big men in their ranks -- the super heavyweights -- competed on Sunday (8 October) in the World Championships behind held at the Gettysburg, in the American state of Pennsylvania.

    SYNOPSIS: Zaitsev of the Soviet Union, competing in the one hundred and ten kilogramme class, keeps himself in the competition with a successful lift in the Snatch division.

    Nilsson of Sweden, in the Snatch division, attempting one hundred and seventy-five kilograms.

    Nilsson failed at the one hundred and eighty kilogram mark.

    In the Jerk section, Zaitsev successfully lifted the hundred and thirty kilograms but was over-extended when he tried two hundred and thirty-seven kilograms.

    Then it was the turn of the super heavyweights. Yuri Heuser of East Germany snatching one hundred and eighty five kilograms. Plachkov of Bulgaria was successful in his lift.

    The Soviet Union's Sultan Rakhmanov trying for one hundred and eighty-seven kilograms in the Snatch section. He was to come second in the super Heavyweight medal hunt.

    One of the highlights was the Soviet Union's Vasily Alexeev's attempt to win the title for the ninth time. He fails to clean jerk two hundred and forty kilograms, and is out of it. Later, examination showed he had a damaged hip tendon.

    Rakhmanov's attempt at two hundred and thirty kilograms was successful.

    Plachkov also had successful lift in the clean and jerk section.
