• Short Summary

DR. KENNETH KAUNDA, THE PRESIDENT OF ZAMBIA, WHO IS IN LONDON FOR THE COMMONWEALTH PRIME?

  • Description

MARLBOROUGH HOUSE; DR. KAUNDA AND INTERVIEWER (SOF)

INTERVIEWER: "MR. KAUNDA, YOU ARE STILL ADVOCATING THE USE OF FORCE AGAINST RHODESIA ON THE ONE HAND AND ON THE OTHER MR. WILSON IS STILL REFUSING TO WITHDRAW THE 'FEARLESS' PROPOSALS. DO YOU THINK THAT ANYTHING CONSTRUCTIVE IN RHODESIA IS GOING TO COME OUT OF THIS CONFERENCE?"

KAUNDA: "I AM AFRAID ALL WE HAVE SUCCEEDED IN DOING IS TO PUT OUR VARIOUS STANDS BEFORE OUR COLLEAGUES. AND I WAS HOPING THAT AT LEAST PRESIDENT NYERERE'S SUGGESTION OF NIBMAR, WITHDRAW 'FEARLESS' AND CONTINUATION OF SANCTIONS AND TIGHTENING THEM UP WOULD APPEAR TO BE A COMPROMISE SOLUTION, WHEREAS IT WOULD NOT APPEAR TO BE THE CASE AT ALL BECAUSE THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WITH THEIR PRIME MINISTER HAVE MADE IT CLEAR THAT THEY STAND FOR 'FEARLESS' AND NOTHING MORE."

INTERVIEWER: "AND THIS IS A DISAPPOINTMENT TO YOU?"

KAUNDA: "A VERY DEEP DISAPPOINTMENT INDEED BECAUSE "ALL IT MEANS YOU SEE, WHEN WE SPEAK OF THE USE OF FORCE WE ARE IN FACT SAYING THAT THIS WOULD BE SOMETHING BETTER ORGANISED WHEREAS IF WE LEFT THE FIELD FREE THIS IS GOING TO MEAN GUERRILLA WARFARE, AND THIS TO US IS MUCH WORSE THAN FORCE USED BY GOVERNMENT TO QUELL THE REBELLION BECAUSE THIS IS GOING TO MEAN SPREADING IT OUT IN A VARIOUS DIRECTIONS BY ALL SORTS OF PEOPLE PARTICIPATING IN IT AND THIS WOULD MEAN MORE CONFUSION AND MORE BLOODSHED IN SOUTHERN AFRICA THAN IS THOUGHT POSSIBLE AT THE MOMENT."

INTERVIEWER: "ON THE QUESTION OF IMMIGRATION, DO YOU THINK THAT ANY COMMONWEALTH CO-OPERATION IS LIKELY TO EMERGE?"

KAUNDA: "I HOPE SOMETHING DOES COME OUT FOR OTHERWISE IT IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO BE A SOURCE OF TROUBLE FOR SOME PEOPLE. BUT FROM ZAMBIA'S STAND ON THIS, I DON'T SEE THIS AS A PROBLEM AT ALL, ??? ZAMBIA, AND THEREFORE DIRECTLY WE'RE NOT INVOLVED IN THIS ??? ALL."
