Background: British negotiator Geoffrey Rippon today (Tuesday) talked with Common Market Ministers in Brussels in a bid to settle the question of fishing limits, the last major obstacle in the negotiations for British entry to the European Economic Community.

But he told the Ministers it was not possible for Britain to agree with proposals by the EEC countries for a ten-year interim period of fishing restrictions.

The negotiators for Norway, Denmark and Ireland also rejected the EEC proposals at separate meetings. The Community members then agreed among themselves to suspend negotiations on the subject until 29th November. In the meantime it is expected that EEC civil servants will try to work out a new compromise.
