Background: The distance from Moscow to Dushanbe is 5000 km. The city is often visited by foreign tourists, who wish to see with their own eyes what changes have taken place in Tadjikistan, the former outskirts of the Russian Empire. The guests are welcomed by young workers of Dushanbe. They explain to the guests that less than 50 years ago only an ancient kishlak /a small village/ stood on the place of the city. The name of the Kishlak was Dushanbe, which means "Monday" - a market was held here on Mondays. The present Dushanbe is a large industrial scientific and cultural centre - there are many industrial plants, an Academy f Sciences, a State University, several Institutes, theatres, numerous libraries. The population of the city consists of about 400 thousand people, about 30 thousand of them are students. Each year Days of Poetry are held in the city.
Poets read their poems in the open air. Tadjiks have written many poems and songs about Dushanbe, about the lovely city which was created on bare rocky land in surprisingly short time.
