Background: About seventy participants representing Member and Associate Member States of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), are currently attending the Third Regional Cartographic Conference for Africa in Addis Ababa.

Enormous gaps still existing in surveying and mapping of Africa was referred to by Mr. Robert Gardiner, Executive Secretary of the ECA, at the opening session on Monday (30 October) in Africa Hall. Mr. Gardiner said that these gaps seemed to arise from the belated recognition by African governments of the importance of these services for economic development.

The conference, which will last until 10 November, elected Ol???ole Coker, Nigeria, as Chairman, Mekbib Mamo, Ethiopia, First Vice-Chairman, and Belko Garba, Niger, as Second Vice-Chairman.

Among other points on ??? ten-item agenda is a discussion of digital photogrammetry and automated mapping. The results of such innovations can be invaluable in planting of new crops, study of soils and even the siting of radio stations and transmitters.
