    THE STATE OF GHANA CAME INTO EXISTENCE ON MARCH 6, 1957, WHEN THE FORMER BRITISH COLONY OF THE GOLD COAST AND THE TRUSTEESHIP TERRITORY OF TOGOLAND ATTAINED DOMINION STATUS - THE COUNTRY WAS DECLARED A REPUBLIC WITHIN THE COMMONWEALTH ON JULY 1ST, 1960.

    AMONG THOSE PRESENT TO HELP CELEBRATE THE OCCASION WERE THE MALAYSIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER TAN T SRI ABDUL JAMIL ABDUL RAIS AND HIS WIFE; THE AMBASSADOR OF THE IVORY COAST, M. HONORE MAMBE POLNEAU; THE NIGERIAN HIGH COMMISSIONER, BRIGADIER B.O. OGUNDIPE, AND MRS. OGUNDIPE; AND THE HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR MAURITIUS, DR. L. TEELOCK, AND MRS. TEELOCK.
