Background: New York's pavements, normally littered with cigarette ends will have a cleaner look with the introduction of new kerb-side ash trays. And no longer will the tramps and "down and outs" have to forage in the gutter for their tobacco ration. Discarded butts will be tidily gathered in the new steel and aluminium sand-filled boxes. Indeed a "collector's" paradise - with cigars and cigarette ends to suit every palate.

Along Fifth Avenue, passengers boarding "no smoking" buses will drop their ends into the bins, making life much easier for the city cleaner, who usually sweeps tobacco remains from the pavement. With an easy-to-handle scoop, he can now filter the sand, separating tobacco from the grains.
