Background: Troops and security police guarded oil refineries, banks and airports in Athens and Salonika on Saturday (19 January) in preparation for the trial of two Arab commandos.
They have been charged with murdering four people and injuring scores of others in a raid on Athens airport last August. The two men, Shaif el-Arid and Tallal Khantourah, both residents of Jordan, will go on trial at the Athens Criminal Court on Thursday (24 January).
The commandos figured in the Lufthansa aircraft hijacking drama last month when other commandos -- who'd seized the aircraft in Rome -- flew to Athens and demanded the release of the two prisoners. The demand was refused. The Greek Justice Minister told the hijackers that Greece would show leniency towards the two Arab commandos at their trial.
Greek authorities have imposed strong security measures around Athens to prevent a similar ransom move during the forthcoming trial.
Tanks and troops took part in an exercise at Athens airport this week to deter possible hijack attempts.
