Background: A group of young officers seized power in Guatemala on Tuesday (23 March) less than three weeks after the general election won by General Anibal Guevara. The election was denounced as rigged by the losing political candidates, and a statement issued by the officers responsible for the coup said they were rebelling 'against corruption following a fraudulent election'. Tanks and troops surrounded the Presidential Palace in Guatemala City, trapping the army's entire high command within its walls. There were no reports of violence in the capital, although shooting took place in the military garrison in Quetzaltenango, west of Guatemala City. At the time of the election, protests against the result led to clashes with police in the streets. The Guatemalan army has been engaged in a bloody struggle against left-wing guerrillas, and the coup led to fears of increased instability in neighbouring El Salvador, where a guerrilla war is continuing while preparations are under way for elections on March 28th.
