Background: Britain's first privately-owned nuclear research reactor went into full operation at Andermaston, Berkshire, UK, Nov.6. The reactor - MERLIN - was started up by the Duke of Rainburgh in the Associated Electrical Industries research laboratories. Chairman of AEI, Viscount Chandos, accompanied the Duke round the laboratory.
In his inaugural speech, the Duke said history had shown that large and sudden jumps into unknown techniques nearly always ended in disappointment. The only certain way was a series of relatively smell advances and a gradual build-up of skill and experience.
That process was going on seedily, said the Duke, in the development of receptors, and Britain should be well placed to meet future demand for then.
