Background: INTRODUCTION: President Ziaur Rahman of Bangladesh arrive in the Senegalese capital of Dakar on Wednesday (18 March) for a three-day official visit. The two countries have maintained good bilateral relations since 1974, and have worked together under groups like the Islamic Conference, the Non-Aligned movement, and the Group of 77.

SYNOPSIS: Heading the welcoming party at Dakar airport were the tall figure of President Abdiou Diouf, and Prime Minister Habib Thiam.

Senegal was the first African country to recognise the Popular Republic of Bangladesh after its independence in 1971. Former President Leopold Senghor went to Bangladesh in 1974, and signed cultural and commercial agreements. Then, a Senegalese-Bangladeshi commission was set up to implement them.

During President Rahman's visit, experts of both governments were scheduled to re-examine various aspects of their countries 'formal links.

Before leaving the airport for the Presidential residence, Monsieur Diouf welcomed his guest as a statesman of very high stature, and a great friend of Senegal. The Senegalese news agency reported that the two leaders shared identical views on all questions they discussed at their meetings.

The Agency said the Presidents had shown a common desire to intensify the development of their bilateral relations.
