Background: Yachting ... and despite an individual win for the Swedish boat 'Midnight Sun' on Sunday (7 September), Italy continues to lead overall in the Sardinia Cup International competition. The Swedes led the second inshore competition from start to finish, but had to survive a protest before their victory was confirmed.

SYNOPSIS: The 25 mile race - the third in the series - began in a north-easterly, force three wind over the Olympic course. The British craft, Morning Cloud, piloted by former Prime Minister, Edward Heath, got off to an encouraging start - but when the breeze faded, the form boats were to come to the front. As the fleet rounded the first part of the triangular course a German and a French yacht collided.

America was holding third place overall, although 'Tatoosh', which finally came second rounded the first mark in last position.

The German entry,m 'Container' cur through the waves under spinnaker, using the breeze to the full.

And it wasn't long before the other competitors followed suit and all 15 teams were showing full canvas.

The Australian craft 'Marloo' was one of the first into the second leg of the race, but their success in last year's Admiral's Cup wasn't to be repeated.

The race was practically over for 'Midnight Sun' from Sweden. She'd drawn away from the rest of the fleet, although the action, as the rest of the competitors rounded the second and third markers, was brisk including the occasional collision. Irish entry 'Silver Apple of the Moon' crossed America's 'Merry Thought' under spinnaker and tall boy sails.

'Formidable' of the Netherlands, showing the same sails, sailed in the manner that befitted her name.

'Midnight Sun', undaunted, crossed the line in first place, but was relegated to second after a corrected finish. The protests followed and later she was confirmed winner after maintaining that the course was too short, and the handicapping system was therefore inaccurate.

'Tatoosh', the American entry, which had been awarded first place before the protest, had to be content with second. The course distance of 23 miles, and not 25, was re-competed, and it meant a number of other boats changed places too. However, Italy retained their overall lead from West Germany and the United States.
