Background: INTRODUCTION: Peru moved a step closer to the World Cup soccer finals when they trounced Ecuador 4-0 in Lima at the weekend. Peru now head the South American Group Three.
SYNOPSIS: Peru, attacking from the right in the white strip, dominated the match and had most of the early play. A series of attacks in the opening half of the first period saw Peru go close several times. However, it was not until the 19th minute that they scored through Velazquez after this attack.
And that was the score at half time. Peru 1...Ecuador nil.
Peru scored a second goal within three minutes of the restart. Oblitas was the scorer.
A third goal in the 51st minute virtually put an end to Ecuador's hopes of survival in the World Cup Again, it was Oblitas who scored.
Peru continued to dominate the game and easily dealt with the few attacks Ecuador managed to put together. This was Peru's third game in their group and they had taken two points from them. A win against Ecuador was to put them at the head of the group table. Chile, the third member of the group do, however, have two games in hand.
In the 62nd minute, Peru scored their fourth and last goal. Alberto Luces was the scorer.
