Background: The Duke of Edinburgh arrived in Calcutta in the evening of 2nd Feb. 1959. He was received at the airport by the Governor and Chief Minister of West Bengal Miss Padamji Naidu and Mr. B.C. Roy. He was then introduced to the Cabinet Ministers of the West Bengal Government by the Chief Minister Dr. B.C. Roy. The Consular corps in Calcutta was well represented and the Duke shook hands with them. Later he drove in an open car accepting the greetings of the crowds lined on both the sides.
