Background: The S. Korean Government launched a nationwide one-day Rodent control campaign last Friday (May 15) with a fund of 184 million won (250,000 sterling.)
The campaign is the second of its king to be launched this year. In the first campaign, held on January 26, about 42 million rats were killed. However, Mr. Shi-Hyung Cho, the Minister for Agriculture and Forestry, said that there were still 72 million rats left alive-about twice the Korean population.
The Government is paying for the campaign and distributes rat poison free of charge to every household. The rats damage 240,000 tons of grain every year.
