Background: President Mobutu of the Congo-Kinshasa has just completed a four day visit to Ghana. Last Tuesday he visited industrial and military projects.
The visiting head of state was accompanied by the Ghanaian leader, Lieutenant-General Ankrah. They toured the huge hydro-electric power dam at Akosombo, about 70 kilometres northeast of Accra. After signing the visitors book President Mobutu was taken to the central room foyer, which is the heart of the dam's operation. The Akosombo dam distributes power to all parts of Ghana. Included in the power network are 16 substations. The dam is part of the Volta River project and was built in six years. It holds back the largest man made lake in the world and the lake when fully formed will cover an area of 3-thousand 300 square miles.
