Background: The bodies of 422 Thai soldiers and civilian officials killed while fighting communist insurgents in the past few months were cremated at a ceremony in the country's capital -- Bangkok -- on Saturday (31 May).

King Bhumibol and Queen Sirikit of Thailand were at the ceremony in that Wat Simahatat Temple.

It was the seventh mass cremation held, and was regarded as having special significance at a time when communist insurgents are stepping up their attacks in the north and north-east areas of Thailand.

The Thai Defence Minster, General Pramarn, said last week's visit to Bangkok by a North Vietnamese delegation had no effect on the incidence of fighting.

North Vietnam is held by the Thais to be responsible for training guerrillas of the "Thai Liberation Army", which operates mainly from based in Laos.
