Background: West German Foreign Minister Walter Scheel met with his Egyptian counterpart, Dr. Mohammed Hassan El Zayyat in Cairo on Monday (21 May), during the first leg of a Middle Eastern tour.
The two men were believed to have discussed the Middle East crisis, bilateral relations in trade and possible West German aid for Egyptian development plans.
On his arrival at Cairo airport, on Sunday, Mr. Scheel had said that peaceful cooperation in Europe -- a major West German policy objective -- would be difficult to achieve with conflicts and tensions nearby in the Middle East.
Mr. Scheel was also expected to outlined discussion he had before flying to Egypt with Soviet Party Leader Leonid Brezhnev, who is visiting Bonn. The Middle East crisis was the major topic of their talks.
