Background: A big protest march in Athens, the Greek capital, took place on Wednesday (17 November) to mark the third anniversary of a student uprising against the former military dictatorship.

SYNOPSIS: There was massive security protection for the embassies of the United States and Soviet Union, which were prime targets for the demonstrators.

Thousands gathered near the Athens Polytechnic, scene of a bloody attack by troops of the military junta three years ago. The protesters found their path to the embassies blocked by steel-helmeted riot police, backed by armoured cars with tear gas cannon. There was some scuffling, but no serious violence.

Education Minister George Rallis said at the weekend (13 & 14 November) that the organisers had threatened to turn Athens into a city of anarchy if police interfered in their planned march on the United States embassy. A march directly on the embassy was banned by the government and the protesters, chanting anti - American and anti-NATO slogans, did not try to break the security cordon. Some opposition political parties have been encouraging the belief that the U.S. government was a supporter of the military junta and that it had encouraged the Turkish invasion of Cyprus in 1974. But the government is anxious to avert anti-American incidents. It hopes that the new United States administration will help Greece solve territorial differences with Turkey.
