Background: After the famine in the Congo Republic.... hunger in parts of another African territory, Kenya. While reports said it had not reached dramatic proportions, there is a shortage of food notably in Kamba and Masai country and certain sections of Kikuyuland.
Much good work has already been done in providing food for the hungry out of Government funds. And the British Red Cross is helping, too. VISNEWS shows just what food means in the dusty, sun-baked township of Lusigetti....
Children held out their thin arms to receive the food as it was distributed from open kitchens. A Red Cross worker said the biggest majority of the children were not actually starving. The subsistence diet of posho one day and some sort of meat-extract soup the next was providing them with a diet that, although it was far too small, was balanced and would somehow keep them going.
Some, though, were starving. There isn't even much wood in this area sun-stricken area for cooking fires - and it's a hard job for the volunteer workers. A relief fund has been set up; but meanwhile, for many, there is only one meal a day.
