YOUNG: "In spite of the fact that everything seems to have broken down I would contend that there's more consensus on the problems of southern Africa today, than there has ever been before. And in the months to come we will see a definition of the consensus within this very body. And the anticipated massive bloodshed and holocaust of southern Africa will be averted essentially through diplomatic initiatives, involving the cooperation of the people you will hear from next."

Background: INTRODUCTION: The new United States Ambassador to the U.N., Mr. Andrew Young, has predicted bloodshed and holocaust in southern Africa will be averted through diplomacy. He was addressing the non-governmental organization of the U.N. which is made of the church groups and other organisations. At the same meeting -- which happened on Friday (11 March), the Burundi Ambassador to the U.N., Monsieur Artamon Simbananiye, attacked both South Africa and Rhodesia. Mr Young spoke first.
Monsieur Simbananiye spoke next. He called the South African government an unspeakable regime because of it's apartheid policies and occupation of the national territory of Namibia. The Burindi Ambassador said South Africa was able to continue these policies in spite of the U.N. embargo against the export of weapons and military equipment. And he attacked South Africa for imposing the politics of division and separate development on its peoples in defiance of U.N. resolutions.
Monsieur Simbananiye said that South Africa, aided by foreign companies, was pillaging the natural and mining resources of Namibia. He accused the companies of defiance of United Nations decrees for the protection of Namibian territory. The Burundi Ambassador said South Africa also gave aid and comfort to the white minority Rhodesian Government through its important military presence along frontiers with newly independent African states.
Monsieur Simbananiye said that it was the aim of South Africa to wipe out the deep aspirations of the people of Zimbabwe to win independence from the white minority government of Rhodesian Prime Minister, Mr. Ian Smith.
