Background: Floods after a torrential downpour in Hong Kong May 6-7 cost the lives of 11 persons and caused the disappearance of eleven others. The floods drove over 6000 persons from their homes. Many of the victims found care and protection at a British Army camp, transformed into an immense relief centre.
The rains burst suddenly after a long drought. In 12 hours 12 inches of rain fell, turning the New Territories district into a vast lake with only roof tops on the waterline. Though the flood waters rose rapidly as families slept they arose in time to escape.
