Background: NORTH NARRABEEN BEACH, SYDNEY, AUSTRALIA

Tom Carroll, a 21-year-old from Newport, Sydney, won the Australian Surfabout '83 competition off North Narrabeen beach on April 25. Carroll, ranked third in the world, defeated the world champion, Mark Richardson en route to the competition, and cleanly won the first set against Richard Cram of Bondi, Sydney. Reigning European professional champion and former Australian junior champion, Cram surfed well in the second set, but not well enough to prevent Carroll from winning two sets to nil. Carroll, who contrary to the usual style, led with his right foot on the surfboard (known in surfing as goofy-footing) collected 15,000 Australian dollars (13,500 dollars) and a new car for his first major win in the country. The crowds who watched from the beach hoped he would become a strong contender in the future world championships.
