Background: Wimbledon favourite Stan Smith--"the richest corporal in the United Stares Army"--celebrated his country's Independence Day today (Tuesday) with a hard-fought win over the Russian player, Alex Metreveli.

The top-seeded American showed his best fore of the tournament so far as he banged home his power-packed serves to defeat the eight-seeded Metreveli, the first Russian ever seeded at Wimbledon. By the end of the tennis match, during which Metreveli double-faulted seven times, the score on the windswept Wimbledon Number One Court stood at 6-2, 8-6, 6-2.

For twenty-five year-old Smith the victory was not as easy as suggested by the straight-set score. The stocky Russian, a twenty-seven year-old sports journalist from Georgia, had a surer touch off the ground and overhead than Smith and covered court at tremendous speed to harass the giant (6 ft. 4 inches -- 1.93 m) American all the way. However he could not match Smith's cannonball deliveries and was able to break his opponent's service only once, while his own service was continually broken. It was the destruction of his service by Smith in the second game of the match that enabled the blond American to take the opening set in only eighteen minutes.

Metreveli fought back well in the second set, at one point holding Smith at four games all, But the American's victory was virtually sealed when Metreveli served four double-faults to lose his service in the second game of the third set.

Smith's win takes him into the semi-finals, and on Thursday he will play Jan Kodes of Czechoslovakia, whom he bet in the final of the D.S. Open last September.
