Background: Breton farmers, whole 2-week revolt against low prices of farm product threatens to spread to other parts of France, mobilized 200 tractors June 17 to block main roads to Guingamp, North Brittany. Other roads were sealed off near St. Brieue and Nantes.

The same day, two thousand demonstrators invaded Malestroit; a small town north-cast of Vannes. They occupied a large dairy plant and delayed lorries for over two hours. In Facquet, one thousand people, driving cars and tractors, paraded through the streets while others blocked roads leading to the town.

Emergency measures for Brittany, drawn up by the French Government June 17, in an attempt to end the revolt, provided that: Breton slaughterhouses would be reorganized and modernized and surplus meat stocked; A special market, already promised, would be set up to reduce 'middle-man' profits; Greater help would be given to poultry farmers; The Le Mans-Rennes railway line would be electrified in 1962, and the extension of the Western motorway into Brittany would have top priority.

Already the Government had decided to export surplus potatoes to Algeria and to stock 6,000 tons of butter to satisfy farmers' demands.
