Background: SEVERAL ROYAL AIR FORCE HELICOPTERS RECENTLY AIRLIFTED THE FIRST BATTALION, ROYAL NEW ZEALAND REGIMENT, TO A DENSE JUNGLE SOMEWHERE IN SOUTHERN MALAYA FOLLOWING A TIP-OFF THAT ABOUT 42 INDONESIAN PARATROOPERS ARE IN HIDING.

THE BATTALION IS COMMANDED BY LIEUTENANT COLONEL R.M. GURR.

THE BATTALION CARRIED ONE WEEK'S FOOD RATION. THEY WERE LANDED BY HELICOPTERS ON TALL WILD GRASS AND IMMEDIATELY WENT INTO ACTION. HOWEVER, THEY MADE NO CONTACT.

ON SEPTEMBER 2, MORE THAN 100 HEAVILY ARMED INDONESIAN PARATROOPERS WERE DROPPED IN THE LABIS AREA, SOUTH CENTRAL MALAYA FROM TWO HERCULES C-130 TRANSPORT PLANES, SO FAR, 27 HAVE BEEN KILLED AND MORE THAN 50 CAPTURED BY SECURITY FORCES IN MOPPING UP OPERATIONS.

AT THE END OF THE OPERATION, THE BATTALION IS EXPECTED TO CARRY OUT PATROL DUTY ALONG THE THAI-MALAYA BORDER WHERE ABOUT 500 ARMED MALAYAN GUERRILLAS ARE IN HIDING -- REMNANTS OF THE ARMY WHICH FOUGHT BRITISH AND MALAYAN TROOPS IN MALAYA FOR TWELVE YEARS UP TO 1960.

MEANWHILE, THE MALAYSIAN GOVERNMENT FEARS THAT IF THE REMAINING INDONESIANS ARE NOT CAUGHT, THEY WILL LINK UP WITH ANTI-MALAYSIA ELEMENTS ON THE MAINLAND AND THUS CREATE FURTHER TROUBLE. THE GOVERNMENT IS VIEWING THE BATTALION'S OPERATION WITH GREAT CONCERN.
