Background: PRESIDENT MAKARIOS OF CYPRUS TOOK TIME OFF FROM DEALING WITH ISLAND'S POLITICAL CRISIS YESTERDAY (TUESDAY), TO MAKE AN EXTENSIVE TOUR OF THE KYRENIA DISTRICT.

HE VISITED 13 VILLAGES IN THIS RUGGED AREA OF NORTHERN CYPRUS. HE GOT AN ENTHUSIASTIC WELCOME IN ALL TOWNS AND SAID THE VILLAGERS' MORALE AND SENTIMENT WAS "VERY HIGH".

CROWDS THRONGED THE STREETS IN EVERY VILLAGE. EACH TOWN'S LEADER PLEDGED "UNDIVIDED SUPPORT IN HIS EFFORT TO OBTAIN A JUST SOLUTION TO THE CYPRUS PROBLEM, BASED ON DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES".

HIS LAST STOP WAS THE TINY PORT OF KYRENIA ITSELF. FROM HERE, ON A CLEAR DAY, THE TURKISH MAINLAND CAN BE SEEN FAINTLY ON THE HORIZON.

LATER, HE RETURNED TO NICOSIA TO GET THE LATEST REPORTS ON THE SITUATION. IN AN INTERVIEW, HE FIRMLY REJECTED THE IDEA OF BRINGING U.S. TROOPS OR ANY OTHERS TO THE ISLAND. HE SAID THAT A LARGER MILITARY FORCE IN ANY SHAPE WOULD ONLY BE HARMFUL.

IF THE LONDON PEACE EFFORTS FAILED ALTOGETHER, HE WOULD CONSIDER CALLING IN THE UNITED NATIONS. HE BLAMED THE CONSTANT TENSION IN THE ISLAND ON "THREATS OF TURKISH INTERVENTION".
