Background: Israeli and Syrian soldiers entered their eighth week of fighting on the strategic Golan Heights on the 3rd of May (Friday). The Syrians said an Israeli tank and an ammunition dump were destroyed and a patrol forced to withdraw during an artillery duel.
They're fighting only 25 miles (40 kilometres) from the Syrian capital, Damascus, and the gunfire can be heard clearly in the city, particularly at night.
On Friday, the Syrians claimed they shot down two more Israeli fighter-bombers with ground-to-air missiles. On Saturday (4th May) they claimed to have destroyed an Israeli radar station and a number of anti-tank guns. A military spokesman said Syrian guns had shelled Israeli troops and equipment in 12 positions.
