    Background: On Thursday (6 September), the twenty-third World Wrestling Championships opened in Teheran. 546 wrestlers from 35 nations are competing in this year's championships, the second to be held in the Iranian capital.

    Price Abdolreza Pahlavi formally opened the competition before an audience of 9,000 people.

    The Soviet Union, the United States, Bulgaria, Japan and Iran are all favoured to take gold medals in the competition. But, the Soviet Union by gaining outstanding performances from its heavier fighters has dominated the early rounds.

    There are 30 gold medals to be awarded for free-style, Greco-Roman and Sambo categories of wrestling.
