Background: Senegal's Head of State, President Leopold Senghor, opened a seminar in Dakar on Monday (19 January) on Black Africa and the Mediterranean world in ancient civilisation.

The seminar at the capital's university was also attended by the Prime Minister, M. Abdou Diouf, government officials and representatives of the diplomatic corps.

President Senghor addressed the seminar in his capacity as Head of State and also as a history professor, a post he held previously.

The President's topic was the effect of the Negro civilisation on the Mediterranean civilisation in genetic and cultural terms.
