Mlle. Laguiller speaking
"I will not talk here of all those barristers, professors, Finance Inspectors and holders of diplomas from the most select schools who are seeking your votes. I am not running because I think I am more intelligent than they are. I am running because the barristers, professors, finance inspectors and holders of high diplomas would be nothing, could do nothing and would have nothing to do if our society did not have millions of men and women to run the economical machinery and produce the necessary consumer goods."

Background: Of the 12 candidates in the forthcoming French Presidential Election only one is a woman. Thirty-four-year-old Mlle. Arlette Leguiller is representing the Trotskyite 'Workers' Struggle' movement on the far left of the political spectrum.
Mlle. Laguiller has been very prominent in a recent strike by bank workers. She has said that the main reason for her candidature is that the left needs an authentic voice: she feels that the leading politicians of the left and right are in fact 'playing the same game'.
At a press conference at the Palais de la Mutualite in paris on Friday, she explained whose interests she represented.
