Background: A capacity crowd watching the Paris International Athletics meeting at the Jean-Bouin Stadium on July 9, saw the young United States athlete Mary Decker-Tabb set a new world record in the women's mile, and British Olympic Gold Medallist Steve Ovett collapse out of the men's 1,500 metres. Miss Decker-Tabb ran strongly throughout her race, slowly pulling ahead of her rivals to cross the finish line in 4'18"08 -- faster by 2.81 seconds than the previous record time set by the Soviet Union's Ludmila Veselkova in 1981. Ovett, the defending record-holder, started the race uneasily and dropped some 30 metres behind Kenya's Mike Boit -- then, with only one lap to go and the crowd expecting him to make his push for the lead, Ovett fell to his knees by the track. Boit went on to win in a time of 3'36"38, with Ireland's Ray Flynn taking second place. Ovett, rushed to hospital, was later reported better.
