Background: In the Khmer Republic on Monday (30 October) villagers from the hamlet of Tram Khan on route three turned out in force to welcome a company of surrendering Khmer Rouge.

They had earlier surrendered their weapons, and these were displayed for visiting Khmer officers and the local villagers.

Many of the villagers were recent refugees who had fled to the area following the escalation of fighting in the Khmer Republic.

Khmer officers gave short speeches praising the Khmer Rouge fighters for surrendering. These were followed by a simple ceremony in which Khmer officers handed back the arms to the former guerrilla fighters. They will now be re-trained and drafted into the Khmer army.
