    Background: BHAMDOUN, NEAR BEIRUT, LEBANON

Fifty frozen bodies have been recovered by rescue workers on the Beirut to Damascus international highway, following some of the worst ever snow storms in the Lebanese mountains on February 20 and 21.

Troops from the multi-national peacekeeping force helped the Lebanese army mount rescue operations. Several small villages near the road were completely cut off by snow, and convoys of bulldozers and snow-clearing machines were used to break through to the villages of Bhamdoun and Dhour El Abadiya, near Beirut. As much as the weather, rescue efforts were hampered by the refusal of the Syrian authorities to permit troops from the Lebanese side of the border to cross over to continue digging and snow clearing. United States Marine helicopters airlifted four people to safety on February 22 from the snowbound Dahr Al-Beidar pass. Despite the severe winter weather -- in which even tracked military vehicles had difficulty moving -- an estimated 350 people were rescued during the relief operation, which involved troops from the U.S., France and Italy.
