Background: Indian troops ranged along the 1965 Kashmir dispute cease-fire line on Monday (6 December) faced large-scale air and land attacks from Pakistani forces. Their defensive positions came under heavy fire as the Pakistanis tried to thrust towards main routes leading to the heart of Kashmir. Jammu, Kashmir's winter capital -- where Visnews cameraman Jagdish Kapoor shot some of this film -- was raided by Pakistani jets. Other Indian positions were pounded with artillery and fighter fire as Pakistani forces attempted to provide cover for their infantry and armoured regiments moving towards the cease-fire line.

But an Indian spokesman claimed that they had been stemming the enemy advance in major tank battles. Earlier on Monday Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had announced her country's decision to recognise East Pakistan as the new nation of Bangla Desh.

Indian troops dug in elsewhere in Kashmir as Pakistani fighters and heavy artillery aimed at providing cover for infantry and armoured regiments advancing across the cease-fire line. The Indians were trying to prevent the enemy cutting through their ranks to occupy the main route into the heart of Kashmir.

The battles came on a day when Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi announced her country's recognition of East Pakistan as the new nation of Bangla Desh.

But by nightfall, Indian troops in outer defensive positions had been forced to withdraw to new territory east of the river Tawi-which runs parallel to the cease-fire line. Mounting casualties were reported on both sides.
