    Background: TEL AVIV, ISRAEL

Thousands of people packed the Mann Auditorium in Tel Aviv for a concert by the Israeli Philharmonic Orchestra, held to mark the centenary of the birth of one of the world's greatest violinists, Bronislaw Huberman. For the Israeli people, however, Huberman has a greater significance - he was the first musician to organise musical activity in the country, and he founded the Palestine Symphony Orchestra - now known as the Israeli Philharmonic. The audience paid as much as five hundred dollars (US) each for a ticket, and they were treated to a performance from six of the world's finest violinists. The soloists included Isaac Stern, but all the musicians played for each other. They included Shlomo Mintz, Ida Haendel, Ivry Gitlis, Yitzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zuckerman. Their performances were greeted by rapturous applause from the audience, which included the Israeli President, Yitzhak Navon. The Israeli government has marked the centenary by designating the period as 'Huberman Week' and the Philharmonic Orchestra are playing concerts throughout the period to pay tribute to their founding father.
