The Atlantic island of Ihla Do Sol is used as a refuelling point by South African Airways because black states opposed to South Africa's racial segregation policies do not give the state-owned airline overflight rights.

Background: INTRODUCTION: The Irish Rugby Union team arrived in Johannesburg from London on Monday (11 May) for controversial seven-match tour of South Africa. Ireland's Rugby Football Union rejected pleas from its government, church leaders and trades unions to call off the tour because of South Africa's policy of apartheid.

SYNOPSIS: A big welcoming crowd at Jan Smuts airport had a long wait for the tourists, who arrived three hours late. The delay was caused by technical problems with their South African Airways flight, which had to turn back to Ihla Do Sol, an Atlantic island off West Africa.

The depleted Irish squad has been dogged by injuries and defections because of personal objections to apartheid. The team will play four matches against multi-racial sides and two Test matches against South Africa's Springboks side.

The Irish team's manager said he hoped the tour would help change the apartheid system. But the Irish government told the team it should not call itself Irish, or use emblems suggesting it represented Ireland.
