Background: To express the heart-felt thanks of the Manchester United Football Club supporters in particular and those of British sportsmen in general, the Lord Mayor of Manchester, Mr. Leslie Lever, travelled to the Munich Hospital-rechts-der-Isar, with his wife.
A large and enthusiastic crowd was at Munich station to welcome the Lord Mayor. Heading the reception party was Dr. Maurer and civic officials of the city. Dr. Maurer is the chief surgeon of the hospital where the injured from the Manchester plane crash were taken on that fateful day February 6th.
There was a wonderful welcome at the hospital when Mr. Lever and his wife arrived with Dr. Maurer.
A speech of appreciation for the Lord Mayor's visit was made by one of the city representatives, councillor Dr. Hamm, in the hospital's main lecture room, where tier upon tier of doctors, students and nurses sat.
Mr. Lever delivered a reply to Dr. Hamm, and thanked the hospital staff for their devotion, patience and self-less care for the injured players and newspaper reporters.
Afterwards the party toured the hospital and looked in on the remaining injured, including the Manchester United Manager, Mr. Matt Busby.
A figure of Nymphenburg china was presented to Mrs. Lever by the hospital staff to commemorate her and her husband's visit.
