Background: The world's leading formula-one drivers recorded impressive practice times in Zandvoort on July 1, as they prepared for the Dutch grand prix to be held on July 3. Zandvoort is a fast 4.2 kilometre (approximately 2.5 miles) circuit, winning around sand dunes. Patrick Tambay is the Ferrari team replacement driver for French-Canadian Gilles Villeneuve who died following a crash in the Belgium grand prix, earlier this year. He is seen here, preparing for this practice run with team mate and fellow Frenchman Didier Pironi. Finland's Keke Roseberg recorded a practice time of 1:16:26 in a Williams, and Roberto Moreno of Brazil, seen seated on his Lotus was clocked at 1:21:15. McLaren driver Niki Lauda and his team mate John Watson are favourites with the crowd. Likewise Alain Prost and Rene Arnoux of the French Renault team. In practice, Prost recorded 1:14:66 and Nelson Piquet in a Brabham was timed at 1:14:72. The cars passing the camera now are the Ferrari of Didier Pironi, Roberto Moreno's Lotus and Patrick Tambay's Ferrari. Car 16 is Rene Arnoux who recorded the fastest time of 1:14:23 (206.204 km/h approximately 128 mph) with team mate Didier Pironi.
