The President of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM), Arthur Scargill, helped being cheer to children of miners on strike on 23/12. He was a guest at a children's party in his home village of Worsborough Dale. Mr Scargill arrived, with Santa Claus, in a red car. As children gathered to be photographed in the company of Father Christmas and the NUM leader, Mr Scargill said he was pleased to take part in the festive cheer which prevailed at the party. The children obviously enjoyed themselves, despite the knowledge that they many not receive as many presents this year. Their fathers have now been on strike for over nine months, and Christmas toys are being provide, thanks to donations from trade unions and political organisations in Britain and abroad. Mr Scargill and his wife Anne, who was also present, are due to attend a similar party for teenagers after Christmas.
