Background: Up to twenty inches of snow fell Feb 21 on Lubbock, Texas, U.S.A. Planes flying over the area could see nothing but a continuous vista of snow which soon turned into slush, making streets and highways impassable. A little used snowplough was brought from hibernation to help in the clearing.
More than any other state in America, Texas is depreciation on its vehicular traffic - distances are great, and public transportation hardly exists. In the streets of Lubbock, traffic was brought to a complete standstill - and two traffic deaths were reported.
Thousands of automobiles were stranded, schools closed, and students and would-be travellers sought emergency shelter.
All those left at home could do was dig- dig in a fairyland of snow more at home on a Christmas postcard than a Texas countryside.
