Background: ABOUT 15,000 STUDENTS MASSED IN THE LATIN QUARTER OF PARIS TONIGHT (FRIDAY) TO PROTEST AT THE CONTINUED CLOSURE OF THE SORBONNE. THE STUDENTS, WHO ASSEMBLED IN THE SOUTHERN SUBURB OF DENFERT-ROCHEREAU, SWARMED THROUGH THE STREETS OF THE LEFT BANK, BEHIND A HUGE PLACARD READING "FACULTY OF MEDICINE ON STRIKE". THEY MARCHED PAST THE SANTE PRISON, WHERE STUDENTS, ARRESTED DURING THE WEEK, WERE BEING HELD, BUT THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS, APART FROM A FEW MINOR SCUFFLES.

THE STUDENTS WERE DEMANDING THE RELEASE OF THOSE ARRESTED IN EARLIER DEMONSTRATIONS, THE REOPENING OF THE UNIVERSITY AND BETTER CONDITIONS.

POLICE GUARDED THE SANTE PRISON AND THE SORBONNE AND, AT ONE STAGE, IT APPEARED LIKELY THAT A CLASH WOULD COME. HOWEVER, SOME OF THE STUDENTS THEMSELVES FORMED A CORDON BETWEEN THE MARCHERS AND THE POLICE, TO PREVENT TROUBLE. THE MARCH CONTINUED PEACEFULLY AND A LITTLE AFTER NINE O'CLOCK (2100 HOURS), MANY OF THE MARCHERS BEGAN TO DISPERSE.

THE MAIN PARIS TRADE UNIONS TODAY ISSUED A COMMUNIQUE PROMISING TO BACK THE STUDENTS AND CALLING FOR NATION WIDE DEMONSTRATIONS NEXT FRIDAY.
