Background: INTRODUCTION: Poland defeated Japan 5-2 in the World Ice Hockey Championships in Tokyo on Friday (18 March). Poland and Japan are just two of the nine nations competing for the title.

SYNOPSIS: Poland led 2-1 at the end of the first period. Here in the second period they mounted an early attack scoring another goal for a two point lead.

With another face-off, Japan attempted to exert some pressure. At this point it was anyone's game. Although managing to gain control of the puck, they quickly lost possession.

Poland once again took the offensive. Kokoszka with a long shot scored still another goal for Poland, making it 4-1 at the end of the second period.

In the third period Japan tried to save the game, with a powerful shot at the Polish net, but Poland's goalkeeper managed to save it and Poland once again gained control of the puck.

With most of the activity centred around the Japanese goal, Poland continued to show superiority in the final period. And once again it was Poland's Zietara who scored their fifth and final goal.

In the final minutes of play, Japan reduced the difference slightly. As Poland's goalkeeper stepped out of his net, Japan's Kawamura put the puck neatly into the net. The final score: Poland 5, Japan 2.
